Firstly, Student Residence Halls
Unlike other countries, German universities do not automatically assign housing to students when they enroll. Hence, it’s highly recommended that you apply as soon as you receive your admission notice. Secondly, Flats (Private Accommodation)
You can choose to flat share (WG, or Wohngemeinschaft). In this case, several people live together in one flat. Everyone has his or her own bedroom, but shares the kitchen and bathroom, as well as other facilities e.g. the internet or phone line.
Next, Hostels
There are several type of hostels available.
1. Youth Hostels
These are aimed at youths as the name states, and many have an age limit – you have to be under 25. Most youth hostels offer dorms, shared bathrooms and lockers.
2. Backpacker Hostels
These offer a wide range of rooms from large dorms to private rooms with even ensuite bathrooms, as well as facilities to cater for travellers e.g. cafes, bars, social spaces with TV. Many backpacker hostels tend towards a wilder mindset – they have no curfew, offer an extensive events calendar, and even mixers so you can meet like-minded backpackers.
3. Boutique Hostels
These are aimed at travellers with a bit more cash or are looking for budget accommodation with more style and facilities. Many even have their own bars and Jacuzzis. A good example is Pfefferbett Hostel in Berlin which has facilities that would rival a hotel. Located in the trendiest part of Berlin, this ultra-cool converted brewery has its own beer garden and private rooms.
Lastly, Pension Garni
Guesthouses, or otherwise known as Pension Garni, are found across Germany. These are small, family run hotels that offer a room for the night and even morning meals. These are great if you want a home-like place to stay with a little more privacy coupled with a home-made breakfast.
It is important to note that you book early during Oktoberfest due to the high demand for budget accommodation close to the event.
